Sri Lanka is different from many travel destinations because a foreign driving licence or IDP alone may not be enough for practical driving. Foreign visitors often need a local temporary driving licence or recognition permit before they can legally drive or rent a vehicle.

This is especially important for travellers who plan to drive a car, rent a tuk-tuk, or ride a motorcycle during their trip.

IDP and local permit are not the same

An International Driving Permit is a translation-style document based on your national driving licence. It helps show your name, licence details, and vehicle categories in a format that can be understood abroad.

In Sri Lanka, however, tourists may also need a temporary Sri Lankan driving licence or local recognition permit. This is a local authorisation connected to the foreign licence and travel stay.

For this reason, travellers should not assume that having an IDP automatically solves every driving requirement in Sri Lanka.

Temporary driving licence at the airport

Sri Lanka now offers a temporary driving licence service for international tourists at Bandaranaike International Airport. The airport guidance states that the foreign licence must be valid for at least one year from the conversion date, and the temporary licence can be issued for up to 5 months.

The service applies to motorcycle and light vehicle classes only. Any restrictions on the foreign licence, such as automatic transmission or corrective lenses, also apply in Sri Lanka.

If you are already in Sri Lanka

If you arrived without an IDP or licence translation, first check what your rental company or local authority requires. Some travellers may be directed to obtain a temporary Sri Lankan permit through the Department of Motor Traffic or through an authorised local process.

This document should be used together with your original licence and should not be treated as a replacement for a Sri Lankan temporary driving licence when the local permit is required.

Renting a car, tuk-tuk, or motorcycle

Rental companies in Sri Lanka may check documents differently. A car rental office, tuk-tuk rental provider, or motorcycle rental company may ask for the original licence, IDP, passport, visa, temporary driving permit, or proof of vehicle category.

Vehicle category is especially important. If your licence does not allow motorcycle riding, an IDP cannot add that right. The same applies to tuk-tuks or other vehicle types that may require specific authorisation.

Before driving in Sri Lanka

Before driving, check whether your licence is valid, whether it covers the vehicle you want to use, whether a local temporary permit is required, and whether your insurance accepts your document set.
