Remote Learning, also known as distant learning, is simply the training of students who might not be physically present in a traditional classroom. Traditionally, this has usually entailed correspondence classes where the student communicated with the educational institution through postal mail. In the digital age, it now involves online learning. There are many advantages to remote learning and many disadvantages, depending on your needs, lifestyle and goals.

Remote Learning - allows the student to gain the most benefit from their work experience, which is often more effective than classroom instruction. When using a home-base school, the student can gain all of the benefits of classroom study from the comfort of their home. They can use the same materials they would have used in class plus the ability to access workbooks, mock tests and assignments online at home. A remote learning student is given the opportunity to set his or her own pace and have as much support as needed throughout the course.

Online/ Remote Learning - when instructors provide their students complete information at their convenience, rather than in class, classroom learning is dramatically increased. Teachers can also easily keep track of the progress of each student during their free time and provide them with help if needed. Students can take their work home and complete assignments there instead of completing them in the classroom where there may be a longer wait depending on the instructor. Since most online/ remote learning programs allow the completion of assignments online, there is no need to send paper printouts to a classroom or mailing them to an address in the mail, thus saving time and money.

When teaching students in a traditional classroom environment, you are required to complete the entire lecture in one sitting, even if it is only for thirty minutes. In a virtual classroom learning requires that you provide the material over time and do some planning ahead in order to avoid a lecture lag. In fact, some professors encourage their online students to take their work home in a small binder they can then fill up with notes and study them at any time. The advantage of the constant feedback offered by a remote learning program is that you can always go back and review your assignments and question areas for future reference.

Online Conferencing - allows you to hold teleconferences over the Internet has many unique advantages over traditional classroom style educational experiences. For example, the nature of online learning means that you can invite multiple people into one discussion at once, rather than having to present the material verbally. This reduces the amount of time needed to teach each individual. Additionally, video and audio conferencing platforms allow you to conduct group discussions that benefit everyone.

Flexibility - the ability to schedule appointments at your convenience is another one of the biggest advantages of remote learning. Since you have access to qualified teachers around the world, you can schedule appointments to meet with your instructors whenever it works best for you. You can also request tutors at any time to come to your office or class. Online learning experiences offer the greatest degree of flexibility because of the way the course material is delivered. Traditional classroom style training requires you to travel to an instructor's office to participate in a discussion, often times several times per week.

Cost - Virtual classrooms cost far less than traditional venues. If you are unable to pay for a large venue with a built-in teaching facility, you can still implement remote learning. Since you are no longer required to rent or buy a large venue, you can save thousands of dollars. You can also save money on your electric, water and other utility bills because you won't have to pay for any classroom furnishings. Many of the benefits offered by using a virtual classroom to make it easier to recoup these costs from your end, eliminating the need for expensive rentals or building renovations.

In summary, if you are looking to teach students basic needs through distance education, consider implementing remote learning in your school. This approach allows you to maintain effective communication with your faculty, your staff and your parents. This efficient method also offers many advantages over traditional classroom teaching, while offering your students greater flexibility in their schedule.
