The initiative is a powerful word in many businesses. It may mean different things to different individuals. In Initiative Melbourne, Lee Sheedy believes that it needs to be used to describe the willingness to take a more complex approach to a project rather than using"traditional" approaches where everything is known ahead of time. The term was originally coined by John Clements in his book Managing Style.

"Ida", as it's known in the business, is a powerful tool that allows people to communicate about what they want from the organisation and how the business can best meet the needs of their stakeholders. Lee has been group leader digital in Initiative Melbourne for the past 3 years and has also served as managing director of IPG Mediabrands independent advertising agency Solutions in Melbourne. During her time with the company, she has seen many cases where the initiative was lost because people didn't have the initiative to act on it. This resulted in delays in getting projects funded and sometimes resulted in a loss of business.

If you want your business to have an initiative, you want to identify those people who have the ability to earn the decision to get involved. Moreover, you need to get their support. Describe what motivates them. Learn what they are looking for in a business and what sort of things they want to see. This can be your personal interests or what kind of rewards they can receive.

In retrospect, you should always recognise the use of processes when it comes to creating initiative. It is not enough merely to identify individuals and send them there. There must be an implementation plan that is laid out for them to follow. This is what will get their attention - the need for change and the benefits that will accrue. A vital element is to ensure that every team member is included in the process of implementing the initiative. When folks feel like they are an integral part of the process - as opposed to just on a separate project - they are far more likely to be prepared to get behind an idea.

You must be clear about what is expected from each team member as part of this initiative. Do not hide expectations from individuals. Do not tell people who initiative is optional. Give them a deadline and explain the steps which need to be taken to implement the ideas. When people understand exactly what is expected of them, they are more likely to get behind an idea because they see themselves as part of the implementation procedure.

The best way to implement an initiative is to get your entire team involved. Involve them in each step of the way - what to do, how to do it, when to do it and who to contact if they need assistance. Give them clear instructions on the format of the newsletter - how long it'll be and the way you expect it to look. Let them know that the major purpose of the initiative is to drive up productivity in the business and increase profit margins.

Among the best ways to demonstrate initiative within a business is to take some initiative. For example, if your business is doing a major revamp of its website, offer to do the work. This shows initiative, but will also get people talking to each other.

It is important to understand that there is usually only 1 person in any group who can say for sure that the initiative is successful or unsuccessful. In most cases, the initiative that makes the company succeed is the one carried out by the team leader. However, it is equally true that just because nobody is leading the initiative effort doesn't mean it is a failure. Only because no leader is leading it doesn't mean that it can't be successful.
