From the moment I first saw a ref. 7031 deep inside an auction catalog almost a decade ago, I knew I wanted one on my wrist. At the time, this watch wasn't even on my radar. But, then again, it wasn't really on anyone's radar. I can't remember the exact estimate on that particular example, but it was far from that of a cover lot. I was only then slowly discovering Tudor's history and the company's relationship with Rolex, and I learned a lot from this funky little chronograph.Obsession is apt. Years after buying my own Zenith Captain Winsor, which paired an annual calendar module (developed by this guy) with the El Primero, I had the chance to visit Zenith and see the mid-20th-century stamping machines still used to form many of the parts for this workhorse movement, which straddles an unusual place at the crossroads of watchmaking history and current production.The watch being offered at billig longines ure Sotheby's on July 14 is lot no. 28 – Breguet no. 1297, which is a four-minute Breguet tourbillon, similar in some technical respects to no. 1176. Where's the resource?In many ways this release pays tribute to both Dimier and Gérald Genta's original iconic design, keeping in line with the aesthetics of the "Jumbo" models with a 8.1 mm thick, 39mm stainless steel case and bracelet, "Bleu Nuit" Petite Tapisserie dial, and bathtub-shaped hour markers and hands. The titanium flying tourbillon cage at six o'clock catches the eye but doesn't distract from the fact that this watch otherwise feels like a quintessential "Jumbo."
