Mental Well-Being

  • Mental well-being is important in every stage of our life. It includes psychological, emotional and social well-being. A good mental health promotes physical and spiritual well-being also. With changing times, family structures have changed from joint and extended family systems to nuclear family systems. Indian joint families always gave a boost to the mental well-being as you could find a counselor or confidante in your aunt, grandparents or an older sibling. The society was closely knit and any work or celebration was a community affair which had a huge positive impact on the mental health. With changing times, family structures grew smaller as a result of Globalization and so the natural ecosystem for mental health provided by the joint and extended family systems diminished. Given that it becomes imperative for all of us to take care of our mental well-being ourselves, says Dr. Manjula Pooja Shroff. The World Health Organization defines it as:
  • "Mental health is not just the absence of mental disorder. It is defined as a state of well-being in which every individual realizes his or her own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to her or his community."
  • Mental health is about being tension free and productive at work since 70% of adult life is spent at work.
